Alert Drivers PDI Training.
A minimum of 20 hours instruction must take place prior to the completion of the first 12 weeks of holding the PDI – Badge "the pink". This is to be signed off on the form ADI 21AT and is designed to be at a ratio of no more than 2:1 training. It is possible to gain additional training by observing other trainees and in car observations with and from an instructor trainer, but each trainee must receive no fewer than the 20 hours training as set out in this training plan.
Any additional observations do not count toward the ADI 21AT but will prove beneficial in the PDI's development within their own lessons and better prepare for the final, part 3 test.
PDI’s must recognise and make no secret of their trainee status.
At anytime the senior instructor or local mentor must be able to sit in and observe lessons given.
Refusal or avoidance of this may result in notification to the DVSA and loss of PDI licence privilege (earning from lessons as you train).
It is the aim of Alert Drivers to provide the trainee instructor holding a PDI Licence with clients that are new learners as much as possible, not learners due for test or having received multiple lessons from other instructors.
PDI’s must not source their own students without the support and agreement of Alert Drivers by way of authorisation from the senior trainer or local mentor ONLY. This is to ensure that trainee instructors develop and grow their knowledge, skills and teaching/coaching techniques in a focussed and structured way in order to prepare for the Part 3 test.

Training is individual focused and should enable the PDI to develop at their own pace with appropriate support therefore the ideal ratio for training would be 1 to 1. In cases where there are 2 PDI’s at the same level of training, possibly starting at the same time then a 2 to 1 ratio can be adopted. To ensure the same amount of in car development takes place then each PDI must receive 1 hour in the instructor’s seat. The training for lesson planning, risk management and teaching and learning strategies can be taught and discussed in a 2 to 1 format. Therefore a complete session for a 2 to 1 ratio should be no less than 3 training hours.
Each PDI will be permitted to teach a lesson on their training day, this is to be 30 minutes prior to training (longer if training needs to be undertaken more than 10 miles from the prescribed training area), no later. The trainer can use this training slot as a regular observed lesson, this will allow the trainer to observe development and progress. Getting to know the learner and how they develop will help the trainer to better support the PDI. It is to be noted that other lessons can also be observed at any time suitable for the trainer, but the pre lesson slot should be observed at the very least at the beginning, middle and end of the 12 week period
